Mr. Wang remembers stumbling upon the near-deserted block and asking the boy whose car it was. “My mother’s,” he said, and continued banging away.
That old New York is the one Mr. Wang holds most dear, but the idea of change that gives his photographs their energy and poignancy is one that he still sees today.
“It exists constantly in New York,” he said. “You could continue to document the evolution of New York. This is just one moment.”
The exhibition “Out Harvey Wang’s Window” opens Wednesday night at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, the inaugural show in the museum’s new gallery space on Orchard Street.
